Men’s basketball wins Western Invitational
The men’s basketball team won all three of their games to win the pre-season Western Invitational this past weekend. They beat the McGill Redmen 62-52 Friday and beat the University of Prince Edward Island Panthers 83-56 Saturday, setting up a title match with the host Western Mustangs on Sunday. Tournament MVP Simon Mitchell led the team with 17 points, and the Gaels overcame a four-point deficit in the fourth quarter to win 87-82. The men’s next pre-season game will be Saturday in Canton, New York, against St. Lawrence University.
The women also got off to a strong start at Western, defeating the McGill Martlets 59-50 Friday. Queen’s then lost 76-45 to the Cape Breton Capers Saturday and 61-44 to the Mustangs on Sunday to finish third overall. The team will open the regular season by hosting the Royal Military College Paladins Friday at 6 p.m. in Bartlett Gym. All funds raised from the game will be donated to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.
Cross country finishes third and fourth
The cross-country teams turned in strong performances despite rainy conditions at the OUA Championships in London last weekend, with the men finishing third overall and the women finishing fourth, only two points out of third place. Braden Novakowski won silver in the 10-kilometre race, while Leslie Sexton finished third in the five-kilometre race. Novakowski, Sexton and Robert Kitz were named OUA All-Stars. The men’s team will compete in the national championships Nov. 10 in Victoria, B.C.
Wrestling wins two medals at Concordia
The wrestling team picked up two medals at the Concordia Invitational last weekend. Eric Bertrand won silver for the Gaels and Chris Levy picked up a bronze. Next weekend, the Gaels compete in Hamilton at the McMaster Invitational.
Fifth place for field hockey The field hockey team lost a close 1-0 match to the Western Mustangs in their OUA quarter-final match Friday. They rebounded to beat the University of Prince Edward Island Panthers 2-1 in Saturday’s fifth-place game. Maddie Gordon and OUA first team all-star Kirsten Jewell scored for the Gaels Saturday.
Mixed results for water polo teams
The women’s water polo team beat the York Lions 10-7 on the weekend but lost 12-4 to the Carleton Ravens. Holly Tawse led the Gaels with six goals.
The men’s team also played four games, tying the Western Mustangs 8-8 but losing twice to York and once to Carleton. Bentley Gaikis and Eric Jones both scored seven goals for the Gaels. Both the men’s and women’s teams will host the Ravens Saturday at the PEC pool.
