Swimmers finish seventh

Last weekend, the Queen’s men’s and women’s swimming teams competed in the Ontario championships at the University of Guelph.

The Gaels entered the tournament as underdogs, with neither Queen’s squad ranked in the national top 10 going into the weekend. The men’s squad finished with 201 points, good enough for seventh place out of the 13 teams, and the women earned 168 points, putting them seventh out of 12 teams.

The only Queen’s swimmer to win a medal and a spot on the OUA All-Star team was Julian Chang, who is in his second year with the team. He finished third in the men’s 50-metre freestyle. Head coach Viki Raymond said, “He did a great job; he worked really hard this year, went to training camp, did everything he was supposed to do and got the results he should have had.”

Nordic skier named all-star

The Queen’s Nordic ski team competed in the Ontario championships last weekend in Ottawa. Rookie Julie McVicar finished fourth in the 10-kilometre race. She also finished eighth in the 5-kilometre race and was named an OUA All-Star. She was the only Gael to earn the honour this season. The men’s squad finished sixth out of 12 teams in the 3 x 4-kilometre relay, and the women’s A squad finished fifth out of 13 teams in their 3 x 2-kilometre relay. The women’s B relay squad finished tenth. The best individual result by the men’s squad was Jakob Van Dorp’s eighth-place finish in the men’s 10-kilometre race.
