Women’s Rugby representing Canada

Fullbacks Karlye Wong and Jocelyn Poirier, both of Ottawa, will be representing Canada later this month at the 2010 World University Rugby Sevens Championship in Porto, Portugal. The tournament which runs from July 21 to the 24 is supervised by the International University Sports Federation.

Wong and Poirier, both OUA All-Stars last season, will be competing with 14 CIS athletes against teams from Great Britain, Guam and Norway in the round robin.

Gaels’ Games broadcast on CFRC

CFRC have announced their Gaels broadcast schedule for the 2010-11 season. Along with broadcasting all Queen’s football games, CFRC will also broadcast four men’s and women’s basketball doubleheaders and five men’s hockey games.

Queen’s grad wins silver in Switzerland

Former Gael Rares Crisan won his first international medal in the men’s lightweight pairs event at the Rowing World Cup. was able to defeat Crisan and his partner Matt Jensen in the final after the Canadian pair had come from behind to defeat the French in the semifinal.

Current Gael Katya Herman won the ‘B’ final of the women’s lightweight pairs and placed seventh overall.

Football Hall of Fame inductions announced

Head coach Pat Sheahan and the Queen’s Football Club announced the 2010 Hall of Fame induction class which included five players, two builders and three teams. The induction ceremony will be held on October 22.

The induction class includes halfback Bill Sirman, offensive lineman Mark Robinson, running back Paul Correale, defensive linemen Jim Aru and James Osborn. In the builders category, Bob Mullen enters the Hall of Fame after spending 12 years as the Gaels’ defensive coordinator. Bob Howes goes into the Hall after 23 years with the Gaels under various positions including 5 years as head coach. The three Gaels teams to be honoured are the 1956, 1964 and 1968 football squads.

Hockey adds to coaching staff

Former Kingston Frontenacs assistant coach and assistant general manager Tony Cimarello was announced by the men’s hockey team as a new assistant coach for next season. He will be replacing former assistant coach Adrian Haird who stepped down to spend more time with his family.

Cimarello has a long history with the Frontenacs organization including a stint as a player from 1989 to 1991 before moving into a coaching position for eight years.
