Men’s hockey splits Montreal road-trip
The men’s hockey team had a rollercoaster weekend in Montreal. The Gaels didn’t fare well against the McGill Redmen, losing a 10-1 decision on Friday night. The team rebounded on the back of a Joey Derochie hat trick for a 6-3 win against the Concordia Stingers on Saturday.
Against McGill, Jordan Mirwaldt was the only Gael able to beat the McGill netminder as the team only mustered 13 shots on goal the entire game.
The Gaels were met with boos from the McGill home-crowd after head coach Brett Gibson stopped his team from shaking hands after the game. What looked to be an unsportsmanlike gesture was actually arranged by both teams as a precaution to prevent the potential spread of the H1N1 virus.
Mirwaldt, Payton Liske and Thomas Franzon added goals along with Derochie to earn the victory over the Stingers. Mackenzie Ball made 29 saves for the win.
Queen’s sits in seventh place in the OUA East with a record of 3-3-0. The team will travel to Trois-Rivières, Quebec on Friday to take on the first place Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières Patriotes.
