From Feb. 7 to 9, Queen’s Wrestling, Fencing, and Squash teams competed in the OUA Championships, with events held all around Ontario.
Fencing
Held at the ARC, Queen’s hosted the 2025 Women’s OUA Fencing Championships, where the Gaels, led by Tia Gayowsky, MD ’27, shined brightly.
En route to capturing silver medals in the individual women’s sabre and in the sabre team relay, Gayowsky earned herself the at the tournament, underscoring her skill and sportsmanship during the Provincial Championships.
The Gaels placed third overall with 143 points. The University of Toronto Blues won the tournament with 346 points, followed by Western in second place with 307 points.
Wrestling
The OUA Wrestling Championships were held on Feb. 8 in Sault St. Marie as Algoma University hosted schools from across Ontario to compete for provincial glory on the mats.
Marthe Laplante-Brady, Sci ’26, was the Gaels’ highest finisher of the day, placing second overall.
The Kingston, Ont. native won both of her matches against athletes from Algoma and Brock University, however, she lost narrowly in the gold medal match against Western’s Isata Mansary.
Laplante-Brady also plays as a flank on the Women’s Rugby team and has punched her third straight ticket to the U SPORTS Women’s Wrestling Championship.
First-year Clara Ryan also qualified for the National Championships after beating her opponent from Guelph University to finish top five in the 65 kg category.
Squash
The Men’s Squash team struck bronze in Niagara, securing third place over the Toronto Varsity Blues in a 6-1 victory.
Akasham Rajagopaul, MD ’28, led the way for the Gaels, winning all but one game, earning him OUA All-Star honours.
The Women’s team came into the tournament defending nine-straight OUA titles, but fell short compared to their past performances.
After sweeping their first three matches, the Gaels lost 5-2 against the Western Mustangs in the semifinals, then lost once more in a close 4-3 game against the Waterloo Warriors, ending their win streak of nine straight championships and cementing themselves just outside of a podium finish.
Western swept the weekend, winning both Men’s and Women’s divisions 5-0.
Curling
The Men’s Curling Championship occurred in Guelph, Ont. from Feb. 7 to 8, where the Queen’s Men’s Curling team placed fifth overall.
The Gaels performed well throughout pool play, finishing with a 3-1 record before advancing to play the defending champs, Laurier, in the quarterfinal.
Although the Gaels came up short in the quarterfinal, they finished fifth overall, led by Kaamraan Islam ’25. The Kingston native earned second-team All-Star honours.
