Men’s volleyball keeps streak going, women’s hockey falls to York, women’s basketball and volleyball split weekends, and men’s basketball can’t overcome powerhouses.
Men’s volleyball keeps winning streak intact
Queen’s had a great weekend on the road against the Western Mustangs and Windsor Lancers, extending their winning streak to six games.
With the wins, the Gaels (8-3) are now in sole possession of second place in the OUA East, with a game in hand on the third-place Ryerson Rams.
On Friday, Queen’s won 3-1 against the Mustangs. The teams were evenly matched in the first set, with Queen’s eventually coming away with a 28-26 win.
However, the wheels fell off for the Gaels in the second set—Western dominated the set 25-12 to equalize.
The Gaels rediscovered their form in the third set, winning 25-20. In the fourth set, thanks to skillful kills by Zac Hutcheson and assists by Zane Grossinger, the Gaels put the Mustangs away with a close 25-23 win. Adam Boljkovac had the game-winning kill.
On Saturday, the Gaels beat the Windsor Lancers in straight sets. The Gaels started strong, taking a tight first set 28-26.
In front of a crowd of nearly 400, the Gaels continued on to win the second and third sets by score of 25-23 and 25-21, respectively.
Next weekend, Queen’s plays two pivotal games against Ryerson and then the OUA East-leading University of Toronto Varsity Blues, the only team to have beaten Queen’s since Oct. 27
Women’s hockey loses to second place York
This Saturday, the women’s hockey team lost a 4-1 contest against the York Lions.
The Lions were hot out of the gates, scoring three goals in the first period.
In the second period, the Gaels scored their first goal of the night, courtesy of Alex Maw. That was all they could muster, and they trailed 3-1 at the end of the period.
The Lions were able to put the game out of reach in the third period with a goal by Samantha Jones. The loss drops the Gaels to 10-8-1 on the season, good for ninth in the OUA.
Next Saturday, the Gaels play at home against the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks.
Women’s basketball pushes Ottawa, fells Carleton in OT
The No. 7 nationally-ranked Gaels (9-5) have proven they can hang with the best in the OUA East.
Queen’s had two impressive comeback wins against No. 3 Ottawa and No. 4 Carleton at home in the fall, and they were looking to repeat these performances on the road last weekend.
On Friday, the Gaels played the Gee-Gees tight until the middle of the third quarter, when the home team went on a run that Queen’s couldn’t recover from. Ottawa went on to win 81-71.
Against Carleton, the Gaels redoubled their efforts from the night previous.
Queen’s was up 44-37 at the half, but a big third quarter from the Ravens had the game evened out, 52-52, going into the fourth.
The fourth quarter didn’t solve anything, and the game proceeded to overtime. Emma Ritcey hit a three-pointer early in the extra frame to put the Gaels up, and after a solid defensive effort, Sophie de Goede iced the game with three free throws in the last minute of play. Queen’s won by a final score of 80-75.
De Goede put up a double-double and Ritcey had 21 points in the win.
Women’s volleyball beat Mustangs, fall to Lancers
Women’s volleyball split their weekend games against the Western Mustangs and Windsor Lancers.
On Friday, the Gaels (9-3) won in a 3-1 contest against the No. 9 nationally-ranked Mustangs. The Mustangs started strong, wresting the first set from Queen’s, 25-22.
The Gaels convincingly swept the next three sets, 26-24, 25-14, and 25-22. Arielle Palermo led the Gaels with 13 kills.
On Saturday, the Gaels fell in a 3-2 matchup against the Windsor Lancers. The Gaels looked great early, winning the first set 25-17.
The teams traded sets, eventually leading to a deciding fifth set. The Lancers took that in nail-biting fashion, 15-13, to earn the win.
Queen’s faces a difficult pair of games next weekend. Ryerson and the University of Toronto, the two teams ahead of Queen’s in the OUA East standings, will both be visiting the ARC.
Gaels suffer road losses against powerhouse Ottawa teams
This weekend, the Gaels suffered back-to-back losses against both Ottawa teams.
On Friday, Queen’s fell to the nationally-ranked fifth Ottawa Gee-Gees in a 97-79 contest. The Gee-Gees got ahead early in the first quarter, but the Gaels kept within striking distance. The half ended 54-41.
In the second half, the Gaels kept up the pressure and at one point brought the game to within nine points. However, the comeback fell well short, as the Gee-Gees won by 18 points.
On Saturday, the Gaels suffered another loss to the defending U SPORTS champion Carleton Ravens.
The Gaels started dismally, trailing 15-4 at the end of the first quarter. Queen’s was more competitive in the second quarter, but they couldn’t manage to make up any ground. The first half ended with the Ravens leading 46-30.
The second half of the game was more of the same. The Gaels tried to keep the game close, but the game became a rout. It ended as a 98-70 defeat.
The Gaels have another pair of away games next weekend—they’ll take on No. 8 nationally-ranked McMaster on Friday and then Brock on Sunday.
