From soccer to golf, the Gaels competed and won in various sports this past weekend. In this edition of Sports in Brief, I’ll be bringing you the brightest moments produced by Queen’s sports teams.
Men’s Football
The Men’s Football team wrapped up their road trip on Oct. 5, losing in a hard-fought 21-51 loss at the hands of the Laurier Golden Hawks.
Quarterback Anthony Lio, Kin ’27, put up a solid performance against the top team in the division, recording a 66-yard touchdown to Matt Camillo, ArtSci ’26, to try to keep the Gaels in the game.
Another prominent performance from the Gaels came from linebacker Justin Pace, ArtSci ’26. Pace achieved 10.5 tackles and a sack during the game, further asserting himself as a legitimate obstacle, even for star-studded offensive schemes like the Golden Hawks.
The Gael’s next game will be their annual Homecoming game on Oct. 19 where they’ll kick off against the 0-6 Waterloo Warriors.
Men’s Hockey
The OUA regular season got underway on Oct. 4, when the Gaels took to the ice against the Concordia Stingers, whom they defeated in a close 2-1 game.
The Gaels trailed for most of the game until defenseman Ian Lemieux tied it at 1-1 late in the third period. Nolan Hutcheson, ArtSci ’25, who has scored in all but one game this season, secured the overtime winner.
Christian Purboo, ArtSci ’25 was a heavy contributor to the Gaels’ win, remaining rock-solid in the net even throughout the Gaels’ early penalty trouble.
The Gaels got little rest after their chippy win against the Stingers, getting right back to work on Oct. 5 against the York Lions. The match against York saw a much more dominant Gaels performance, taming the Lions in a 6-3 win.
The Gaels came out flying, responding to an early Lions goal with three unanswered goals from Hutcheson, Ethan Larmand, ArtSci ’28, and Nathan Ribau, ArtSci ’27.
Throughout the rest of the game, the Gaels added to their lead with goals from Daniel Michaud, ArtSci ’27, Cameron Tolnai, Comm ’27, and an empty net goal for Hutcheson.
The Men’s hockey team’s next game is on Oct. 11 against the Lakehead Thunderwolves at the Memorial Centre.
Men’s Rugby
The Men’s Rugby team secured their third straight win, shutting down the Laurier Golden Hawks 78-22 on Oct. 5 at Nixon Field.
Owen Lee, Comm ’26, posted three tries throughout their match, with Marcus D’Acre, ArtSci ’26, recording nine conversions.
Their match also marked this year’s Seniors’ Day, honouring the following graduating student-athletes: Mike Hayes, ArtSci ’25, Connor Gittens, Comm ‘25, Adam Doyle, Kin ’25, Eric Godden, Sci ’25, Dan Svoboda, Kin ’25, Sterling Seunarine, ArtSci ‘25, Greg Mazza, ArtSci ’25, Jacob Merkur, Kin ’25, and Hayden Parkins.
The Men’s rugby team will wrap up the OUA regular season on Oct. 12 against the Brock Badgers in St. Catharine’s, Ont.
Women’s Rugby
The Women’s Rugby team locked in their fifth straight undefeated regular season campaign, positioning themselves as the top Women’s Rugby program in the nation as they dismantled the McMaster Marauders 123-3 at Nixon Field on Oct. 5.
The Gaels were led by Kennedi Stevenson, ArtSci ’28, and Lizzie Gibson, ArtSci ’25. Stevenson recorded five tries during the game, with Gibson posting 38 points off two tries and 14 conversions, bringing her regular season point total to 100.
Before the game, the Gaels honoured the following graduating seniors Izzy Page, ArtSci ’25, Mya Brubacher, ArtSci ’25, Siobhan Sheerin, ArtSci ’25, Lauryn Bons, Kin ’25, Emma Brennan, ConEd ’25, Elena Pinkerton, Kin ’25, Maddy May, ArtSci ’25, Sophia Tafel, ArtSci ’25, Kylie Mosgrove, Kin ’25, Mika Matsukobu, HealthSci ’25, and Grace Anderson, Sci ’25.
The Gaels will kick off the OUA playoffs on Oct. 12—the location and opponent are yet to be determined.
Golf
From Oct. 4 to 6 the Men’s and Women’s golf teams travelled to Windsor, Ont. to compete for the 2024 OUA golf championship at the Ambassador Golf Club.
Overall, the Men’s and Women’s teams finished in third place, securing themselves a spot at the National Championships this spring.
Daniel Abraha, Comm ’26, won the Len Shore trophy for best individual performance, shooting a 67, four-under-par, and a five-stroke lead above second place. Abraha is the second Gael ever to win individual OUA gold.
Men’s Soccer
The Men’s Soccer team lost both of its games this weekend, falling 2-3 to the TMU Bold and losing in a close-fought 0-1 battle against the Nipissing Lakers. During the loss to the Bold, Ian Ferguson, Sci ’25, and Andrea Gortana, Comm ’25, scored goals for the Gaels.
These losses marked the end of the Gaels’ four-game lossless streak, bringing them to 2-6-3 for the season. The Men’s team is now ranked seventh in the OUA East Standings, trailing behind Laurentian who has a record of 4-3-3.
The Gaels will compete in one more match on Oct. 12 at Richardson Stadium against the eight ranked team, Trent Excalibur, to gain some momentum before the advent of the OUA playoffs on Oct. 19.
Women’s Soccer
On the Women’s side, the Gaels split their weekend series, shutting out the TMU Bold 7-0 on Oct. 5 before falling to the Nipissing Lakers 1-2 the following day. The Gaels’ loss to the Lakers marked the end of their five-game win streak.
Mattson Strickler, ConEd ’25, opened the scoring for the Gaels just four minutes into the game, with an own goal from the Bold doubling up the Gaels’ lead. Other goal scorers for the Gaels were Clare Sun, HealthSci ’26, Seema Sakran, Kin ’26—who scored twice in the match—and Brinley Bjornson, ArtSci ’28, who followed up another own goal by the Bold to finalize the score as a 7-0 win for the Gaels.
Their match against the Bold also marked the Gaels “Kick for the Cure” game, with the team sporting pink socks to raise awareness and money for breast cancer. With a goal of $15,000, the team has raised just under $8,000 and will continue to collect donations throughout the rest of the month.
The Women’s team has one more double-header remaining on their schedule, kicking off against the Trent Excalibur on Oct. 12 and then the Ottawa Gee-Gees on Oct. 13. Both games will be played at Richardson Stadium in Kingston, Ont.
Currently, the Women’s team sits in third place, putting them in a strong position to make a deep playoff run.
