Queen’s competitive synchronized swimmers won the gold medal at the Canadian University.
Championships last weekend at Laurier University. In addition to the gold medal in the competitive team event, the Gaels won silver medals in the novice and competitive duets and bronze medals in the novice team and novice solo events.
“Everyone swam really well and all the routines looked really good and clean,” said Melissa Dermody,
a member of the team and the team’s manager.
The gold medal team for Queen’s was the Yellow team, which is coached by Colleen Daly. Queen’s enters three teams in the competition which are differentiated by colours: Yellow, Red and Blue. There were 17 teams in the competition, including four teams that flew to the competition from Western Canada. The team only has competitive club status at Queen’s, and it was difficult to get the amount
of practice time they wanted for the competition. “We had a really strong team this year and a really great routine,” she said. “It’s really great for us because we’re a competitive club and only get four hours of pool time [a week].” The team found other ways of getting pool time to practice, Dermody said “We did a bit of mentoring with Kingston Synchro,” she said. “We would get a bit of pool time through their facilities.” The team will lose a few swimmers and coaches to graduation, but Dermody
isn’t worried.
“I think the team will be strong next year.”
