Queen’s men’s and women’s swim teams traveled to Guelph last weekend to compete in their third meet of the season, the divisional championships.
The Gaels finished fourth overall behind rivals the Carleton Ravens.
Despite its name, the event is just one of several opportunities for athletes to meet the qualifying time standard for the national championships later this season.
Head coach Viki Raymond said the swimmers have not had the chance to race much yet this season.
“Once they go through training camp, we expect better results,” she said. The training camp consists of 10 days in Florida after Christmas. Despite a disappointing overall finish, several athletes had standout performances.
Rookie Alexandra Hubbard finished second in the 50-metre backstroke with a time of 31.7 seconds.
Brian Kim also finished second in the 50-metre breast stroke with a time of 31.25 seconds.
Other strong finishes came from Faye Ling, who finished third in the 100-metre freestyle, and team
captain Adam MacLellan, who finished third in the 200-metre breast stroke.
The women’s 4×50-metre medley relay, made up of Alexandra Hubbard swimming backstroke,
Brittany Segren swimming breast stroke, Annie Ruksys swimming butterfly and Serena Palmer swimming freestyle, finished in third place.
The men’s 4×100-metre freestyle relay, made up of Mike Chu, Brian Kim, Mike Casista and Julian Chang, also finished third with a time of 3:45.33. The team has three meets left before nationals.
Raymond said that, while the swimmers coming in are from good teams, a university program is still an adjustment for them. “University swimming is more about team scores and how the team finishes rather than individual scores, so it’s a different mentality.”
