Women’s Soccer
Kara Kitts is the Journal’s female athlete of the week for her key contributions to her team’s undefeated status. Kitts, a fourth year striker for the Golden Gaels Women’s soccer team, scored a key goal last Saturday afternoon, lifting Queen’s to a 2-0 win over Waterloo. Kitts then scored the lone goal the following day as the Gaels battled Wilfred Laurier to a 1-1 draw.
“I’m more of a team-based person, and the girls on this team are so great,” she said.
The focus on playing a team game feeds into the mindset the Gaels bring to every practice.
The success this approach has brought them is evident on the scoreboard—only one of the Gaels’ four opponents thus far has managed to score a goal.
As one of only three fourth year players on the team, Kitts brings valuable experience to the field, but she is confident the younger players will shine when the pressure is on.
“Experience is not a big deal. We have lots of talent and we step up when we need to.”
David Clinkard
Men’s Triathlon
Last weekend David Clinkard led a small contingent of Queen’s triathletes to an excellent showing at the Triathlon Canada University Championships. Clinkard finished the tough race in 1:57:03, an excellent time that garnered him 15th place in the ultra-competitive Elite division and made him the eighth-fastest university-age male.
“I’ve also been working with the Queen’s swim team, which really helped,” he said. “[In races] I always try to have a great swim, because it makes everything else much easier.”
The third-year life sciences student has been a triathlete since 1999, and he’s stuck with the sport because of its infinite variety.
“It’s always changing,” he said. “It continues to be interesting to learn about.” His goals for this season with the Queen’s triathlon team include winning the championships again—an aspiration well within reach, according to team member and co-captain Catriona Jackson.
“This year the team is big and strong,” she told the Journal. “We’re hoping to defend our provincial title and win university championships again.”
