Danae Benjamin
Women’s track and field
The Queen’s track and field team’s stellar 14-medal performance at their first-ever Cornell meet last Saturday in Ithaca, N.Y., was the setting for Danae Benjamin’s standout performance. She captured silver medals in both the triple jump and long jump events.
Benjamin said she was impressed with the team’s performance overall.
“I think everyone kept up with their training over Christmas,” she said. “Traveling was a bit more challenging than we expected.”
Benjamin was the only female athlete to bring back more than one piece of hardware from Cornell, but didn’t consider it a strong performance on a personal level.
“It was just good to get the technique and the repetition under my belt because usually we don’t compete this early in the season,” she said.
The team heads to Canton, N.Y., this weekend as the defending champions.
“I think we’ll probably do better this week,” Benjamin said. Queen’s will send 80 competitors instead of the 32 that competed at Cornell.
Ryan Gibb
men’s hockey
Coming off of a 3-0 shutout win over the RMC Paladins in the final game of the fall term, Gaels’ netminder Ryan Gibb was an integral part of his team’s three-point performance this past weekend. However, Queen’s three-game unbeaten streak came to an end with a 3-2 shootout loss to RMC on Wednesday.
On Friday, Gibb stopped 45 of 46 shots in a 2-1 win over the University of Toronto Varsity Blues, handing the Mid East division leaders their first home loss. The next day he stopped 35 of 38 shots. But
despite starting the third period with a 3-1 lead, the team only managed a 3-3 tie with basement-dwelling Rams.
On the weekend, Gibb stopped 80 of the 84 shots he faced.
Nonetheless, Gibb said the draw with Ryerson was a disappointment for him. “It definitely didn’t finish the way we had hoped,” he said. “We were 20 minutes away from a sweep of the weekend.”
Gibb still considers the weekend as a whole a positive one for the team. “In no way can you consider three out of four points on the road a bad weekend.” So far this season, Gibb has faced more shots than any other goaltender in the country, on average seeing 41 shots per game.
