University looking for new chancellor

Baillie steps down after two as ‘a wonderful representative of Queens’

Queen’s Chancellor Charles Baillie will be stepping down in June at the end of his second three-year term as the University’s 12th chancellor.

University Secretariat Georgina Moore said that throughout that time, Baillie has been an outstanding chancellor and a wonderful representative of Queen’s.

“He just really demonstrates that he’s very, very engaged, and he’s been a great spokesperson and ambassador in his six years here,” she said.

Baillie is going to head Alberta’s investment management corporation that oversees the province’s funds.

The University Council is looking to appoint a new chancellor.

A nine-person advisory committee has issued a call for nominations, which will be accepted until Oct. 3.

“The process is just getting underway to try and identify someone who would be the next chancellor,” said Moore, also secretary of the advisory committee.

The committee will bring forward a nomination to the University Council at their next meeting in May 2008.

At that meeting, a new chancellor will be appointed for a three-year term and will assume the volunteer position in July 2008.

Baillie will continue in his role as chancellor until then. He will also fulfill convocation duties, including conferring degrees, before he steps down.

“I think chancellors feel honoured by being asked to do this job and we feel honoured to have someone fill the role for us,” Moore said.

She encouraged anyone from the Queen’s community to submit a nomination.

“The committee is very interested in receiving nominations,” Moore said.
