Queen’s will several other Canadian universities in extending a helping hand to university students affected by Hurricane Katrina.
The University announced Wednesday that special consideration for ission will be given to students unable to return to hard-hit campuses in the states affected by the storm.
“Queen’s is very, very open to providing help,” Vice-Principal (Academic) Patrick Deane said to the Journal. “There are many ways in which students might get wind of this, but we’re going to make a statement saying that people can the Registrar’s Office to make arrangements to come to Queen’s.”
The University will work with the presidents of universities on the Gulf coast to facilitate the issions process, Deane said.
According to the release, the University will ensure students coming from the afflicted areas have access to housing and financial assistance while in Canada.
Deane emphasized the school is taking an active role in letting displaced students know about the opportunity to come to Kingston.
“I’m encouraging the deans to arrange through their s in the Gulf coast to get in with students that are interested in coming to Queen’s,” he said. “You need to reach out actively to find out where these students are.”
At press time, University spokesperson Therese Greenwood said the University hadn’t determined whether any students from Louisiana or Mississippi currently attend Queen’s.
Hurricane Katrina, a Category 5 storm, hit the Gulf coast Aug. 29, leaving large a portion of New Orleans underwater and 10,000 feared dead in the state of Louisiana. There are also plans in the works to devote more than just educational opportunities to Katrina relief efforts. The release said Deane intends to investigate how the expertise of individuals at the University can be applied to alleviating the effects of the disaster, though there are no specific plans at this time.
Queen’s s McGill University, the University of Ottawa and the University of Windsor in providing this type of aid to students.
