Veterans Day

The Queen’s golf team is set, and the names are very familiar

A wonderfully maintained and tightly laid-out Amherstview Golf and Country Club played host to the Queen’s University Golf Team’s annual qualifying tournament. Brisk winds and treacherous pin placements combined to set up extremely difficult scoring conditions for Wednesday’s play-downs. The less then ideal conditions coupled with the grueling thirty-six-hole Medal play format of the event put the emphasis on course management and forced players to combine skilled shot making with a high level of patience and discipline.

As the dust settled on a challenging day of golf it was veteran Brian Uchikata who rose to the top. Uchikata, the 2000 club champion at Milton’s Rattlesnake Point Golf and Country Club, fired a combined 150 (73-77) in the 36-hole event to earn low-qualifying honours. Gregory Kosandoff, Brian McAlpine, Andrew Lawrence and Craig Sinclair rounded out the top five and they, along with alternates Charlie Deekes and Brad Boivin, will make up the 2000/01 version of the Queen’s varsity golf team.

Iowa State transfer and three-year team veteran Brian McAlpine noted his optimism for the year. “I am extremely excited for our prospects this year. We have four returning starters including Craig Sinclair, who finished 12th at this summer’s Canadian Amateur Championship at the National. We have played together in the past and look forward to improving upon some already impressive results.”

Coach Bert Kea’s athletes appear to be ready for the challenges of a new golf season and, with some great talent and an excellent core of veteran leadership, their goal of attaining an OUA championship banner seems well within reach.
