Where you may have seen her work: A very imperfect rendering at the Artel and and though you die bird, you will have a fine view: a sort of prayer for some sort of rare grace at Verb Gallery What medium do you work with?
I guess I would be considered an installation artist. I use a lot of paper-based materials, and text, video and sound. I really like wood and fabric too but I haven’t been using that lately which is based on the fact that I don’t currently have a studio.
How did you become interested in art?
It goes back to around high school: I just took art classes and liked it a lot. When I was applying for university, art was what I was most interested in so I took fine art and it just sort of flowed together.
What inspires you to create?
I write a lot and I read a lot and I feel like I spend a lot of time thinking about stuff and that’s where the ideas come from. But looking at other artists and what they’re doing is usually good for inspiration.
Whom do you look up to as an artist?
In Kingston, there’s Clive Robertson, one of my mentors. He was a professor for me when I was at Queen’s and I ire his work a lot. In the greater sense of things, I really ire the work of Joseph Beuys and Sophie Calle.
What subjects are you interested in portraying?
I recently did a show about the soul. I’m always dealing with faith, not in the sense of a religion but in what people believe in and why, issues about the self and the collective individual. I don’t know, it ranges usually, but it seems to centre around human nature and how I connect it to my own self.
