Principal appoints Lynnette Purda as Interim Dean

Another one bites the dust—Wanda Costen is stepping down as the Dean of the Smith School of Business on Dec. 31.

On Aug. 29, Principal Patrick Deane announced Costen would step down from her role to take on the position of Provost and Vice-President (Academic) at Dalhousie University, cutting her five-year term short. Costen became a Gael on July 1, 2021.

“Under Wanda’s leadership, the school has made important progress in several key areas, including a new strategic plan, greater integration of teaching and research, and improved access and inclusion for students,” Principal Deane told the Queen’s Gazette.

As Costen heads to Halifax, Lynnette Purda, current associate dean (graduate programs) and RBC fellow of finance at Smith Business, takes over. She begins her 18-month term as Interim Dean on Jan. 1, 2025.

According to the Gazette, Costen and Purda will work together in the months ahead to ensure a smooth transition.

The University will search for a permanent dean next summer, with the new dean taking over in the summer of 2026.
