With league-based competition resuming this week, varsity teams are buckling down for their first matches of 2022. Some varsity clubs have championship dates, others are to be determined, and some have even been cancelled.
Here, The Journal breaks down what games are taking place this weekend and which clubs to watch in the winter sports season.
Varsity Sports
Basketball
Both Men’s and Women’s Basketball hit the hardcourt for the first time in over two months this weekend, in Friday-Saturday doubleheaders against the uOttawa Gee-Gees. Both Gaels teams will play at home on Friday night and travel to Ottawa the following day. The men’s team is undefeated this season (9-0), while the women’s team is currently undefeated at home (6-3).
Hockey
Men’s Hockey will hope to defend their spot at the top of the OUA East (8-1) with two games this weekend against Ontario Tech on Feb. 11 and Feb. 13. The Gaels last played the Ridgebacks on Dec. 4 and came out with a 5-1 victory.
Women’s Hockey (1-4) are on the road to North Bay for a Friday-Saturday doubleheader against the Nipissing Lakers. The Gaels fell twice to the Lakers in early November and will hopefully flip the script in these first two matches back.
Volleyball
Men’s (4-0) and Women’s Volleyball (3-1) will start the second half of their 2021-22 seasons with matching weekend road trips. Both teams face Trent University Friday, Feb. 11, for their first matchups of the season against the Excalibur. They will then travel to Toronto to play the Varsity Blues Sunday, Feb. 13.
Varsity Clubs
Figure Skating
The Figure Skating team will be attending a virtual Winter Invitational hosted by McMaster University Feb. 21—their first competition in over two years. Currently, the date for the OUA Championship is not yet determined. According to co-captain Trina Dykstra-Maherson, ArtSci ’23, the uncertainty of the Championship is not deterring the team. Everybody is grateful to be back on the ice, brushing up on technique and putting in finishing touches on the choreography.
Curling
The Women’s OUA Curling Championship will be held in Waterloo Feb. 25 to 27, while the Men’s Championship date is still to be determined. Curling Canada recently announced the cancellation of the U Sports Curling Championships due to concerns related to COVID-19. This is the first U Sports winter championship to announce a cancellation this year.
Women’s Football
The Women’s Football team had 100 students ed to participate for the winter season and drafted the prospects into four teams on Draft Day, which took place Sunday, Feb. 6. The teams will begin with practice, training, and learn-to-play sessions this month. Plans for competition—which run under the Ontario Women’s Inter-Collegiate Football Association—are still to be determined.
