Skinamarink
Filmed in Edmonton, Alberta, this 2022 experimental horror film is being featured at The Screening Room this weekend.
Kyle Edward Ball’s directorial debut follows two children as they wake up in the middle of the night to discover their father and all the doors/windows in their home missing. Made on a $15,000 budget, Skinamarink has impressed critics across North America since its release at Fantasia Film Festival in Montreal last year.
The eerie tale calls on childhood fears as Ball was inspired by a nightmare of his younger self.
Broker
Hirokazu Kore-eda’s Broker weaves together a story of family, belonging, and hope in an unlikely film following two brokers in South Korea who occasionally steal infants from their church’s baby box to sell to affluent couples who are incapable of having their own.
When a young woman returns to the church after abandoning her baby with the hopes of ensuring her child a good home, she discovers the two and their illegal business. Thereafter, the three of them embark on a road trip to interview the baby’s potential parents.
With critics raving about Broker, it is not a film you want to miss this week.
The Time That Separates Us
On one Thursday of each month from now until April, the Agnes is partnering with The Screening Room to bring Kingstonians an intimate viewing of the work of selected artists across Canada.
The first of this series, titled Open Secret, is featuring Parastoo Anoushahpour’s The Time That Separates Us this Thursday. The 35-minute film explores the biblical tales of Lot’s wife and the contemporary themes of militarization, tourism, sexuality, and gender at the site of the Pillar of Salt.
Anoushahpour is an Iranian Canadian artist who has been featured in film festivals across the world and will be facilitating a conversation with attendees after the feature.
Flashdance – 40th Anniversary Event
The Screening Room is bringing back the cult classic Flashdance for the film’s 40th anniversary in an immersive experience.
Audience are encouraged to dress up in their best 80s-inspired outfits to enjoy the film alongside special guests and pre-show footage from Kingston’s own 80s vaults. It’s not an event Flashdance fans will want to miss!
